![]() On top of the lettuce, I put, um, just a little blue cheese salad dressing, sweet grape tomatoes, fried red onion, a healthy smattering of freshly ground black peppercorns, some slices of leftover bison steak tips, and some Whole Foods Black Forest bacon bits (I’m not sure why it’s called Black Forest bacon. Actually, I’d appreciate it if anyone could tell me what kind of lettuce I do have… I’m one of those gardeners who just chucks stuff in the ground and then later on wonders what it is that we’re eating. Slightly more nutritious than iceberg lettuce, I’ve got a mix of two types of lettuce in my salad. Seeing as I have a thriving garden thanks to the seedlings that I bought at Urban Oaks Organic Farm in New Britain, I decided to get right into it and chow on some of those fresh lettuce leaves that are still tender and crisp, and not yet made bitter by the extreme summer heat. You pretty much have to love it if you eat meat. What could be better? Fat sprinkled with fat and then topped with more fat lying right on top of a nutritionally sparse token vegetable. It’s a wedge of iceberg lettuce decorated generously with steak, blue cheese crumbles, bacon, cherry tomatoes, fried red onions, and blue cheese dressing. Today I decided to riff on a Half Door favorite, the Black and Bleu. I’m a huge fan of stealing recipes from my favorite restaurants and making them my own. So, despite all of my well-intentioned thoughts about eating more veggies and consuming less animal flesh, I think I’d just better face the facts. In fact, proportionally, I think it’s actually mostly meat. Oops.Īnd just to prove how truly vegetarian-incompatible I really am, right now, at this very moment, I am shoveling in one of the best salads I’ve ever had. And then my mother-in-law stopped over with some Seen Hang and sticky rice, so I was obliged to continue stuffing my pie hole with meat. Just yesterday afternoon, I was thinking, “Yeah, I bet I could go vegetarian for a little while, if only to maybe cut back on my massive calorie intake… yeah, I could do it.” And then for dinner, I grilled up a beef burger piled with bacon, lettuce, tomato, guacamole and blue cheese dressing.
